Traditional Desserts I Grew Up With
As a mother and homemaker, I always try to make sure my children have healthy, homemade food waiting for them in the kitchen. Whether it’s a warm meal or a simple dessert, there is something special about knowing that what they are eating was made with love and care.
But, of course, not every day is perfect. Sometimes the pantry is almost empty, grocery shopping has to wait, and yet I still want to put something homemade and sweet on the table for my family.
That is when I think about the grandmothers of my childhood—the women who knew how to turn a handful of simple ingredients into something truly delicious. They didn’t need fancy recipes or a kitchen full of ingredients. With a little flour, some sugar, and whatever they had on hand, they could create desserts that were simple, comforting, and unforgettable.
This Simple Cake reminds me of those days. It is made with humble ingredients, but the taste is anything but ordinary. Every bite brings back memories of warm kitchens, homemade treats, and the comforting feeling of being surrounded by family.
For me, this isn’t just a cake. It is a little Taste of Childhood—a reminder that sometimes the simplest things are the ones we remember the most.
A Taste of My Childhood

My grandmother was a real magician when it came to making something out of nothing!
My childhood is filled with the smells that came from her kitchen — freshly baked cake, toasted sesame seeds, grape molasses, and those beautiful caramelized edges that everyone wanted the most.
Her recipes were never complicated. They were simple, humble, and made with ingredients that were usually already in the kitchen. But somehow, they always tasted incredibly special.
Maybe that’s because they were made with love.
Now, as a mother myself, I want my children to grow up with those same flavors and memories. And one of the things that makes me happiest is seeing that, despite all the packaged sweets and endless choices available today, my children still genuinely enjoy the traditional homemade desserts I grew up with.
The Two Cakes My Grandmother Made
My grandmother only used to make two types of cake.
One was a rich yogurt cake she called Mrsna Torta, and the other was Ravanija.
Ravanija is one of those beautiful old-fashioned Macedonian desserts that proves you really don’t need much to make something delicious. It is simple, affordable, and made with ingredients that many of us already have at home.
And honestly, I think it might be one of the most budget-friendly cakes ever.
It’s soft, lightly sweet, fragrant, and topped with sesame seeds. But my favorite part has always been those golden, caramelized edges — the pieces everyone secretly wants first.

A Simple Cake With a Big Memory
Every time I make Ravanija, I feel like I’m bringing a little piece of my childhood into my own kitchen.
It reminds me of my grandmother and of a time when people didn’t need a cupboard full of ingredients to make something wonderful. They simply used what they had, and somehow turned the simplest things into something that stayed with you forever.
That is the kind of food I want my children to remember.
Not just the taste, but the feeling behind it. ❤️
Because sometimes the simplest recipes carry the biggest memories.
If you have a recipe from your grandmother that takes you straight back to your childhood, I would love to hear about it. ❤️
